How a culinary product company has quickly grown sales and product base with a flexible ecommerce platform
Three years ago, Grant Yuan wanted to combine his expertise in marketing and PPC with his passion for culinary arts.
When he fell into the cutting board industry, he decided to run with it and made plans for an online store.
One of the first steps he took was to look at different ecommerce platforms. Leveraging his tech expertise, he took a peek under the hood of several different options.
Ultimately, he decided on BigCommerce for its scalability and out-of-the-box functionality.
Since then, CuttingBoard has achieved a 220% increase in revenue since launch, and a 48% YoY growth in revenue.

When I was running trials, I tested BigCommerce, Shopify, Magento, and OpenCart.
I knew options like OpenCart were well-established, but I wanted to get hands-on to make sure I was choosing the best platform.
Fairly quickly, I realized that BigCommerce had the best out-of-the-box features, whereas the others relied on lots of extensions and add-ons.
I wanted a tool that would be ready to use right off the bat without an extensive setup time to achieve peak functionality.
I could tell that BigCommerce was the platform that would allow us to grow without any major bottlenecks that would slow up the process.

In the early days, we only had 30-40 SKUs and our business was operating on a small scale. Over the course of the past few years, however, we’ve grown pretty quickly.
We now have more than 300 SKUs — so there’s greater complexity.
The good thing is that we use a tool called Skubana in our BigCommerce store that makes order management and fulfillment across multiple channels (including eBay and Amazon) extremely simple.
This tool allows us to manage orders with various dropshippers, warehouses, and fulfillment centers all from a central dashboard and via an automated process. No manual entry required. It’s a life-saver.

I used to be very anti-discount, but I changed my mind after we implemented some of the discounting tools in BigCommerce has built in.
Thanks to tools like cart abandonment emails and discounts, we’ve seen a big increase in conversions.
Even something as small as a 5-10% off discount has helped us boost overall sales.

We offer our customers a lot of different customizations on our products, so another feature of BigCommerce we’ve enjoyed is the ability to add these tailor-made personalizations within the product selection process.
This helps us offer a more unique product and improves the overall UX of our website.
Now, customers can come in and build unique gifts and custom-made items with just a few clicks.

My advice for other business owners is this: it’s important to save time and work on the things that matter.
Rather than tying up time with manual data entry and packaging, focus on things that help your business grow — like marketing, business development, etc.
Let tools and integrations take care of the other elements of the business, and outsource work when you need it.
Don’t be afraid to invest in resources that help you grow faster and with less stress.
